LIVING HISTORY WEEK-END AT ROYER MANSION & A JURIED CRAFT SHOW
05/17 & 18/2008
This week-end is packed with things to do! On the lawn at Royer Mansion will be the Blair County Chapter of Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. You will be able to go from tent to tent to see and purchase their crafts. At the pavilion, the Blair County Genealogical Society will have an information booth. Inside Royer Mansion, Dr. Bob Hileman and the Colonel Crowther Foundation will have exhibits, and visitors will learn about the hopes and fears of civilians living in this area of Central Pennsylvania during the early months of 1862. Robert Broadwater and Dr. Bob Hileman will be doing a book signing from 5 - 7 p.m. on Saturday. Then, at 7 p.m., the Foundation will present the living history program "Thunder in the Valley". This program features both slides and speaking parts. It covers the experience of the Pritchard family who were in their house while the First Battle of Kernstown was fought in March, 1862. The battle took place on the fields of the Pritchard farm and an adjoining farm. Visitors will then move to locations on the Mansion grounds to learn about military life as experienced by both Union and Confederate soldiers. Demonstrations of infantry drill, artillery practice, and camp life will provide visitors with a unique learning experience. Also on the grounds will be Dr. Hayden, portraying a Civil War doctor. His Civil War ambulance will also be on display. Of course the "Friends of Royer" gift shop will be open and as always, food will be available to purchase.
